The word charism comes from the Greek charis — grace, gift. It is the particular way in which a religious community lives the Gospel, inspired by the Holy Spirit and shaped by its founders and tradition. The Carmelite charism is a unique gift given to the Church through the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
For the Discalced Carmelite Nuns, the core of our charism is contemplative prayer lived in solitude and silence, in fraternal community, and in total consecration to God through the evangelical counsels. It is a life wholly oriented toward union with God in love, for the sake of the Church and the salvation of souls.

Elijah, Mary, and the Teresian Reform

A life shaped by grace
“Let us remember that we have only one soul,— St. Teresa of Avila
that we have only one short life, that there is only one eternity,
and that we must live and die in the love of God.”
Like St. Thérèse of Lisieux, we believe that “love alone” gives worth to all things. Our mission is to be a heart in the heart of the Church, sustaining the Church’s apostolic work through our hidden life of prayer and sacrifice. We pray especially for priests, for vocations, and for the salvation of souls. The charism is also expressed through hospitality — welcoming guests who come to the monastery seeking prayer, guidance, or simply a quiet place to rest in the Lord.

Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.

Martyr, Co-Patroness of Europe
Edith Stein (also known as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) was a renowned philosopher, Carmelite nun, and martyr. Her famous quotes span topics from spiritual surrender and the search for truth to the dignity of women.
